RollPlay Animated Series Test Graphics / Animations

So, we’re starting to work on this and have some test graphics / animations.

These are very, very rough but somewhat indicative of what we’re going to be using style wise.

The animation comes from Dead_Flip who is also a streamer! But he also is part of a cool place called http://www.bmkmp.com/

Anyways, what do you guys think?

I’m…not really sure what to think. As of right now I don’t particularly care for the style of animation, but obviously in this state it’s difficult to tell just where it’s going and I’m willing to withhold judgement for the time being. Maybe if we could get a more cohesive example of his work? That website doesn’t really seem to show much in that regard.

Loving the use of actual audio from the show for sure.

Undecided whether it’s better to see the straight up character animated, or the person/character blend (aka, a character JP plays will have some of JP’s features like the glasses, beard).

Thanks for the opportunity to work on this, should be a lot of fun!!

Hard to say to be honest, since it’s way too early to tell how it’ll all flow together. However, I am very excited to see how it turns out. Based off that 2 seconds, I’m sort of reminded of the Ricky Gervais Podcast animations, which brought character & flavor to the podcast without going overboard.

I like that its using the audio track from the show and its not super edited. A lot of the side conversation outside of the RP make the scene funny/memorable.

I like that the characters are the cast in cosplay, because it would be funny if for example Geoff goes into Lawyer mode it would change from in-character Geoff , to Geoff in a suit standing in a courtroom or something. (can’t wait to see animated Strippin in Bel’sah cosplay :stuck_out_tongue: )

Going to wait and see how the animation turns out before judging.

I like using the OOC audio and such from the episode.

I’d maybe like a little more of the characters in the figures over fully the players. Something were if I knew enough about the characters I could recognize who was who.

I like the idea of blending them as well.

I really really like the use of the audio from the show on top of the animation. I’m hype as hell to see more of this in action. It’ll be interesting to see this style applied to more serious moments - i’m not sure how Titanfall or The Date would look in the same style, but I am hella curious to find out.

I’m also in the hard to say boat. I’ll compare this to the Co-optional Podcast animated, what I really like about those is how the animator manages to add to what is being said/the story and not just showing it. A example of where this didn’t work, in my opinion, is when Felicia Day was on the TGS podcast. That moment is hilarious, but you don’t miss out on anything if you just listen to it:

(source, it’s at the start about 30 seconds in)

There are many great moments in Rollplay, I’m a little bit worried that some the great ones will be hard to add too, ex the portal on top of the dragon and Vincent taking of both his gloves.

To be blunt I was highly sceptical to the art and approach at first, i’m more used to anime style cartoon which is why I frowned. BUT!- After seeing the reference posted by Crowly I am convinced it will be awesome! The real audio from the show with comical cartoon figures as shown on the clip could be hilarious! Im hyped!

That animation is by a different artist / animator, most likely it will be a different style. I only posted that to make my point a bit clearer.

Yes! I merely got the reference as a way to describe a different art style than the japanese anime art style that I, myself are used to.

DragonballZ style animation would look hilarious though. Haha

Looking forward to the animated stuff, I like the style and I know to make it more detailed would take more time and money, I think it will work for most things if it’s light hearted or funny, but if you wanted more serious some scenes might not be the same.
On that note though it’s hard to say without seeing it first, but I’m sure it will still be amazing and fun to watch.

Since this is an early testing phase, may I suggest another different style for a test? (if it wasn’t in the queue already)

One more or less detailed player model which is just simply bobbed when the person is speaking or doing things. Less detailed animations but gets the point across well and may be easier to produce after the assets are ready?

I don’t think a Terry Gilliam style would fit.

What Dead_Flip is doing fits. Nothing ground breaking please don’t take this the wrong way. Like I said on subreddit given the budget we could expect something along the lines of Co-optional or Game Grumps animated. I’m not sure how far into the process he is but a new animation test in that style would mean new art assets getting drawn approved then animated. All those things are time and money. Maybe for the next one but that is if JP want to switch style and mood for each show.

The fact we are seeing this means it is the direction of this project I wouldn’t expect drastic changes . As an animator if the client came back saying we gotta change this that and the whole look style. Do more tests so my community can approve it. I wouldn’t be happy.

Everyone has their own personal tastes and Dead_Flip is one guy. It’s impossible for him to meet them all. All we as fans can do is trust in PJ’s Judgement and Dead_Flip vision.
