RollPlay Animated Series Test Graphics / Animations

First off. No matter what you post, it wont suit everyones tastes.

This being said, i like it, i think it works for comedy, its very early, i dont imagine you will have lines for arms in the final. I specifically dont think it would work for serious stuff though. But that’s A ok. As a general rule of thumb it would be better when dealing with such short animations to deal with comedy subject matter. In that situation the raw audio is an asset, blending character and player is an asset. not necessarily flowing in real time is an asset. it kind of all works together.

If you were doing serious business moments from shows raw audio from the show might be more difficult to work with. The stop and start in the action would need to be handled carefully so as not to work against the animation. It would be a very different animal altogether to work with and it would go either way as to whether it would be better presented with all aspects of the meta /player discussion stripped or included.

also this. if jp starts hitting the animator with design by committee feedback it is literally the worst thing he could do to him. it is a portent of doom.

Totally.
This was a mega rough animatic.
The movement, lines, details, more mouth shapes, etc are coming.
I promise at least 5 people will like it when it’s done.

It looks great for what it’s for. A Co-optional podcast animated shorts kinda thing fits the most comedic things about RollPlay, the classic events that were more comical than they were amazing or serious. HOWEVER, these aren’t necessarily all I want animated.

To be quite honest, I don’t think you could ever get enough money from Patreon to properly pull off a solid animation for something like Titanfall, or the Date, BUT there already is a very good example of how to do these things - the comic strip of the first episode of Swan Song. I can’t remember who drew that but it was an excellent way to do it, and then you could put it together as a still frame with VOs of the specific lines, see how that works out. I would much rather prefer something like that then this style for those moments. And since this is the first time this is really being pulled off, there’s nothing to say you cant change styles for each animation. I can’t wait to see how this turns out!

Not my favorite style of animation, but it is definitely an efficient one, and could definitely fit a lot of Rollplay moments. I like it a lot more after seeing the video and getting a bit clearer idea what direction it is headed. How long will the first short be?

I am excited to see the end result I’m sure it will be great.

Animation, it is still very early to tell and it is a very subjective matter in regards to liking it or not. We can expect a very professional polished look considering the guys behind it.
I must confess however I am quite dissapointed with the faces presented here. Again this is subjective to the style of the artist, but the likeness is really missing. If I hadn’t read Geoff’s name next to the face, I wouldn’t be able to tell or maybe just because I know he would be one of the protagonists. This is not what is needed in a cartooney version where the viewer should be able to identify in less than a second the characters through more than just the voice… It seems to miss the distinct features of our favourite casters.
I hope the faces too are still going to be worked on… Apart from that, so hyped to see this coming along, keep up the good work and thanks for sharing so early in the works!

i would say co optional is a good place to look there. They have very strong character elements that underpin everything. what would probably benefit in terms of the previs testing is to do concept treatments for a single character across multiple roles.

So a very good example is strippin.

You have a sheet with strippin as himself irl , galahan , as belsa
Then down the sheet you have variants of that not as much in design as in how those three relate to one another.

How much of and what traits run across the line.

Is the character in role treated as strippin irl in cosplay? so that even as belsa he has a beard and black hair peeking out from under a blonde wig? There are pros to this approach, as unlike in co optional, the players are often putting on accents. If you were unfamiliar with rollplay could you really tell with your eyes closed that dans’s court of swords characters were the same person? or gassys? but it is also constantly breaking the 4th wall too.

The other extreme is drawing the characters true to the characters.

I totally agree with what you say! Just seeing the few seconds of animation it seems that the direction taken is drawing the casters in desguise/ cosplay (seeing JP wearing a wizard robe). As such the emphasis seems to be on showing that the casters are cosplaying and not the fictional characters created. That’s why i’d love (purely subjective) that they would look a bit more alike. But again, it s just for me when I look at the three faces presented I am not convinced by their likeness which granted can be hard combining his style.
