Feedback to JP regarding RollPlay spoilers and Patreon

Hey JP! Some frustrated but hopefully constructive feedback.

Let me preface this by saying I love all the content and been a longtime viewer since the SOTG days. I’ve watched pretty much all the shows and continue to do so. Having said that, I just changed my original Patreon pledge from $20 down to $2. Significant or not, I am simply using it as a tool to voice my feedback on top of making this post. I can’t be as invested when you are making it so difficult to follow your content without fear of something being spoiled.

You’ve spoiled significant events in Court of Swords a few times now and are often on the edge of spoiling BoP. Having watched your content for years now, I know you have a tendency to do this.

Most recently, I’m of course referencing Dropped Frames, where you just randomly throw a major spoiler in the conversation out of nowhere before Zeke manages to note “wow spoilers much?” and I pause the video. Too late at that point. Spoiled. Ruined.

This happens quite often and it’s at the back of my mind every time I now watch a show you do - the fear of being spoiled on something, whether it’s games, shows/movies or RollPlay. I like your content. I don’t want to watch it having to tiptoe around with my finger on the pause trigger. I would hope those seemingly casual offstream/aftershow conversations stay out of the actual liveshows. Maybe you are just jaded towards spoilers because of Twitch chat and whatnot, I don’t know, but try to remember many of us aren’t.

On the other side, when I’m watching the Co-optional Podcast I can trust that anytime a spoilery discussion begins, TB will say so and have warning graphics on screen for the duration of the conversation. Something to be learned from, I think. There’s also something to be said for keeping the shows in their own respective slots.

There’s lots to watch every week, whether it’s RollPlay, Dropped Frames or the normal livestreams. This means it’s also hard to stay up-to-date on everything. I am still catching up on Solum. I am some weeks behind on both CoS and BoP. I’m not asking you to remain silent about the shows forever. I am simply puzzled by the lack of restraint regarding recent shows. The rest of the cast seem to be able to contain their enthusiasm by staying silent and respectful of spoilers, but you are constantly “slipping”, to put speaking of character deaths without warning lightly.

I’m glad you’re having fun and being enthusiastic about the shows, but please remember on top of the people who watch the livestream, there’s an equal amount of people like me who wish to watch the content from the vods days/weeks after the liveshow. Believe it or not, you are a part of the media we consume now. Try to treat your own content in the same light.

About Patreon specifically (CoS spoiler)

Some general feedback I’m hoping you can learn from and avoid in the future.

A month ago I felt like the first big Court of Swords spoilers popped up. The way this happened, was through the RollPlay Patreon emailing me: “Hey! Here’s the new character creation video for so and so!”

That quickly prompted me to disable all future Patreon emails and stop me from reading the RollPlay patreon posts altogether. I would appreciate it if you found a way to name the post titles of such spoilery videos differently, to avoid specifics that scream topics like character death.

EDIT:
Glad to see this is better formatted in the recent videos. I suggest grouping multiple videos under the same post if there’s more than one character creation video for the same week.

Hope you read this JP and can take it as constructive feedback. I do appreciate all the great content you and the others are producing. I’m just hoping you can tread more carefully with the spoilers in the future.

I have no idea how far through CoS you are so if this winds up hinting at events you’ve not seen, I’m sorry; On the character creation videos, I’m pretty certain they have changed that so it’s just “Adam and a member of the CoS cast” now. I mean, the patreon comments still spoiled who that was for me before I’d caught up, but hey, these things happen

Not talking as an admin but as a viewer

Do the viewer have no responsibility at all?

I love to watch UFC, but it’s too late to watch live and that’s just the situation sometimes I can’t demand them to move it to a time that fits me. I’m also well aware that it’s a live event that happens at that moment. I can’t stop people from talking about the fights in media or online, nor should I, no one should try and control someones life. What I can do is effect how I interact with a live show after it’s done. I try to catch UFC as a VOD as soon as possible and I avoid places where it might get spoiled. Is it perfect? No. But it’s my responsibility as well when it comes to certain things.

You’ve made the decision to wait with CoS. It’s fine decision but you made that decision, and for every day that goes by, that comes with a risk. I’ve also decided to wait with CoS and I was spoiled but I’m not spoiled to think that it’s someone eleses fault for my decision or situation.

Sure there can always be improvements in certain areas when there’s pre-planned content. But to say that others needs to change their behavior or how they talk during a live show is taking it to control freak level.

Guess i’ll trow my two cents into this becouse THIS is something that annoys me alot.
JP has no obligation to not talk about things YOU would consider a spoiler.
He tries to not spoil things most of the time becouse he’s a nice guy, but still, spoilers will happen regardless, if not by JP or the cast then by the chat.

Maybe i’m being abit too harsh, but my view on spoilers are: “If the story is still good i don’t care if i know the end”.

I wouldn’t compare it to a sports event as that isn’t really an ongoing continuation of a story like a TV show or RollPlay is. You also don’t see moviestars spoiling their own product hours/days after the premiere.

Also I did try to make it clear I am already taking many steps to avoid getting spoiled. The difference here is, I am getting spoiled through the content creator himself. Browsing the Internet daily, I am quite well versed at avoiding spoilers from the community or random websites through muted keywords in Tweetdeck and avoiding comments in YouTube etc.

I don’t think I’m asking for anything unreasonable when we’re talking about a name change in Patreon posts or simply stating spoilers incoming. Most of us already have that filter in our everyday speech for other types of media. You know to tread carefully when a new episode of GoT pops up. Why not have the same courtesy for this?

Sports probably have a lot longer story lines than any TV show of film. There’s sport story lines that stretch across generations.

Well you’re not well versed in avoiding spoilers (apparently) since you tuned into a show where, as you yourself stated, often spoils things… how is that even a logical? :itmejpwtf:

I didn’t say the opposite and I agree. And from reading other posts here it seems to have been addressed.[quote=“KipexTV, post:5, topic:336”]

Not everyone does and that’s more of a fact than “most of us”. I’m sure JP thinks about spoilers and there’s been several times where they’ve paused for spoilers as well. Sometimes however things happen in a live envoirment that’s a spur of the moment thing.

I mean, as someone who goes on patreon, and never reads any spoilers, if anyone wants, I can give you a fool proof method; don’t read the comments. Just go in, click the itmebot, download the MP3 and run away before anything else catches your eye. Badabing, badabang, badaboom, you’re in, you’re out, and you’re on your way with your sweet, sweet digital loot like Jesse Cox in a video game.

To be honest as a UX designer that shouldn’t be the experience for that. I have no idea how patreon works but it would be much better to have comments load only after a prompt to see them. However that’s out of JP’s hand since he doesn’t own Patreon.

With investment into it I’m sure there could be another option (off-site) for that where we have more control but that’s also a cost issue at the end of the day. Patreon isn’t really designed for this type of content in mind.

Give me unlimited money and I’ll get all your wishes granted :itmejpsoon:

The way it should be :itmejpbro:

Yes, the Patreon post format is better now. Edited original post.

Come on man. Admin or not, the least you can do is read and quote my post appropriately instead of picking a piece of a sentence and trying to flame me like some tabloid. I specifically wrote “from the community or random websites”, like Twitter or YouTube.

In this instance checking the comments in YouTube would have actually helped, since the top voted comment on the Dropped Frames pt1 video is some friendly dude warning of the spoiler in advance.

I know JP cares about spoilers at some level. Why else would any streamer have mods enforcing chatrules about spoilers in general. I’m simply saying he could do a better job of keeping in mind his own content is on the level of TV shows for other people.

I think it’s shortsighted if your line of thinking is to simply state “don’t watch anything else he does”. As I originally stated, I don’t expect anyone to not talk about it later down the line, but in this case it’s a situation where the two shows happened almost back to back within a day or so. I get that it’s fresh and exciting, but there’s plenty of other ways to express that than flat out spoiling it with no warning.

Something to learn from. That’s all I’m saying. I’m not telling anyone to change who they are. I am simply offering my feedback and he can use that constructively or choose to ignore it. Up to him. I just don’t see the downside of spending a few seconds to warn beforehand.

I don’t see how people are defending the spoiling of a show the day after it aired by JP. I don’t care about spoilers but a lot of people do. What if someone wasn’t a sub and hadn’t made the jump to be a patron and they because of either time zone conflict or say a job they couldn’t watch live? They wouldn’t have been able to watch or listen to the whole show by the time Dropped Frames aired. So are they are supposed to avoid all of JP’s content for the next four days just to be able to watch JP without being spoiled on a show? What if there was another Rollplay show during those days? Well now you can’t watch that either and have to wait another four days just to watch JP live. The rule in chat for the longest time is that discussion in chat to avoid spoilers has been to wait until all episodes are out on youtube. Litterally all JP has to do is say, “Hey i’m going to talk about some spoilers for a minute.”, and this would all be solved.

I think this specific instance could be considered a fluke, as far as I can tell he tries to distance most Rollplay from other content as often as possible. This situation happened to have a story behind it which made it a special circumstance. I think he’ll be more careful in the future but it feels a bit extreme to just throw it all in. Although to be fair, I think how you add to the Patreon is completely fair and valid and I wouldn’t say what you’re doing is wrong because that’s not my call. I do think it’s a little unfair to throw him down though, things will slip and I think this was a special memory.

Although to be fair, I feel completely fine with pretty much all spoilers. The content is never soured if I know the ending but that’s me and how I see it. Examples would be I tried to avoid spoilers on the Force Awakens but I was unsuccessful, still loved the movie. Happened to avoid spoilers on Walking dead for 3days while still cautiously checking my normal internet sites. Sometimes spoilers will just fall and you just gotta run with it. I won’t say that my PoV is better or worse than anyone’s because it’s mine. I just hope you realize he’s as much a person as the rest of us and we can have moments where we forget little details, even if it’s a large part of your career.

Hopefully I don’t feel too out of line coming in here, not one to post much so no hate intended. Just trying to show another PoV if anything.

I think that’s a fine opinion to have there’s just a bunch of different ways to put it forward. There’s always thing within reason, trying to figure out a way to get around spoilers on a show is a much better approach. Trying to limit someone to say something on their own stream is very controlling. A much better topic would have been “How do we solve spoilers on Dropped Frames in the future?”. There’s different ways to put something forward and this topic was probably not it. Also I doubt that @KipexTV can read JP’s mind on the matter for all we know it’s something that slipped out, JP noticed it, tried to do the best after it had slipped out.

The Patreon feedback was put forward much better and it’s true that it should have been addressed since that’s something that’s a lot easier to control.

I meant you might want to avoid a show that you know often have spoilers according to you. It’s sort of like missing an episode of The Walking Dead but then knowingly tuning into The Talking Dead. Not saying that Dropped Frames should be that but it is according to you. A better way would have been a topic where you try to figure out how to solve the problem together instead.

I’ve updated your quote in my post to include the whole sentence.

Going to lock this thread for now. If @KipexTV (or anyone else) still feels that the spoilers on Dropped Frames is a problem and want to work on solving it together feel free to start that topic in #dropped-frames

A thing that’s true both here and on Reddit is the following:
“You may wish to respond to something by disagreeing with it. That’s fine. But, remember to criticize ideas, not people.”

Regretfully I did the same. I want to publicly apologize for that. I’ve started a conversation with @KipexTV in private and hopefully it can be resolved the right way. I also invite everyone to talk about the idea of spoilers here and how to solve it: Displaying discussed game title/topic in overlay + spoiler warning
