What are some headphones that are really good for 100 or lower?

Literally the title. My headphones just broke and I am now needing a new pair. Figured I may as well ask the community and see what they say.

I’ve been using a HyperX Cloud Core for the last three years and they have worked wonderfully. Unfortunately they are now broken. So I am open to suggestions, preferably under 100 US dollars, as I do not have much money to throw around.

From what I’ve read and heard, the Audio Technica M40x are a good option in your (about 70-80 USD it seems). I am using the M50x right now but they are at about twice the price of the M40x. The only problem is that they dont have a built in mic…

I personally am a fan of the Sennheiser HD 280 PRO. You can get them for 70-80 I believe if you shop around. I have at least two pairs. They’ve been my go-to headphones since 2008.

Depends on what you’re looking for really. I’ll second the 280 pros. I’ve had mine for ~7 years and they are as good as new[1]. I’ve also heard good things about Grado SR80e’s, which I believe are cheaper.

Neither of those have mics, if that’s your thing. I’d suggest checking out wirecutters, they tend to have suggestions that are at least well thought out, which can be hard to find when you talk about sound equipment: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-best-150-over-ear-headphones/ .

[1] OT: this is why Apple getting rid of the headphone jack-- and the predictable scramble to be like them that will inevitably follow-- is so annoying. Pretty soon we’ll all be buying headphones and dumping them when their built-in batteries run out

AKG K240. They’re my brand of choice and I’ve never been disappointed with them and the build quality is always amazing and last a really long time

Also I’ll point you to this http://www.head-fi.org/a/headphone-buying-guide and go check out the forums or reviews on head-fi for whatever you plan on buying, lots of solid infos everywhere

I don’t really need a built in mic, I can buy a 2 dollar crap one if I really need one.

Thank you for the suggestion, I’ve been looking at the Sennheiser and Audio Technica stuff for a while. I didn’t actually realize that some of their stuff was cheaper.

I will definitely be looking into these. Thanks again :itmejphappy:

The Sennheiser HD 280 pro’s are actually what I think I’ll pick up, based on what everyone is saying in here. On Amazon they are $100, but if they last for 7-8 years, well damn that’s what I want.

It’s good to hear that they have lasted so long with you and @JustTeaThankYou. I think I’ll get these for my next pair. Thank you very much for your time. :itmejp10:

I said this before, should have put in the title description, but I don’t really need a mic and if I do I can get a really carp one for cheap.

And Apple can go fall off a cliff for all I care. I hate the direction that they are heading the tech world in with their dumb decisions. It makes less than no sense to remove the headphone jack.

@destraudo Yeah the cloud core is a really nice headset for its price. Hope you enjoy it :itmejphappy:

@neurawr Interesting, I’ve never actually heard of AKG before this. (I’m not crazy into the audio world, I’m sorry :itmejps:) Thanks for the list though, I now have it bookmarked and if/when I have some more money to throw around with, I’ll definitely be taking a look at your list. Thank you very much for showing me this and heloing me choose a new pair of headphones. :itmejp10:

Plantronics Gamecom series 100%. I’ve owned 3. Best headset I’ve ever used.

It has a USB connection, surround sound, a mute button and volume controls right on the headset. The cord has no weak point other than twisting. The plastic it is made of will conform perfectly to your head after a months use.

Much better than other so-called “gaming headsets” that have NONE of these features for 100,200,300$

I work from home, and so do a lot of skype / hangout calls. Instead of paying through the roof for the magical combination of good headphones and a good mic[1], I just bought a ModMic instead: http://www.modmic.com/

I just noticed today that Jesse Cox uses one, and if it’s good enough for him, it’s good enough for me

[1] I firmly believe this doesn’t exist outside of stupid price ranges.

Thank you for this. I’ve never heard of ModMic, but looking at the site and prices, these look awesome.

And Jesse uses one too, even better. I’ll have to definitely check these out.

The price ranges are really stupid. Like really stupid…

Again, thank you for the recommendation, these look awesome. :itmejphappy:

Using to 280’s right now. I’ve had them for 6 years and no signs of stopping.

6 years. Nice, that is literally what I’m looking for. A set of headphones that lasts a long time and has good sound quality. Thank you for yet another recommendation on these headphones. :itmejp10:

I’ve been using the Hyper X cloud Pro Gaming Headset for 2 years and have only had a small issue.
If my audio is too loud others can hear what i am playing or watching on youtube. Overall it’s a good headset.
It might have something to do with something else in my setup maybe on why they can hear my audio just was never important enough for me to actually solve it but i have tried.

I had the Hyper x cloud 2 headset. its fine, but for me it was squeezing my head too much that I started getting headaches. It was also uncomfortable for my ears.

I got the Sennheiser HD 598 (black) and picked up the modmic from massdrop (havent tested that yet). HD 598 are really comfortable and I would recommend them for that alone. They are open headphones which I like for gaming, but when the TV is blaring in the room you can hear it more than a closed headphones (like my old cloud 2).
its more than $100 but It will last a long time.

Hey Noor :itmejpfist:

Thanks for the recommendation, but as I ordered the 280’s like 6 hours ago, its a little too late.

Still a good recommendation though. When I go back through my set up and look to upgrade stuff, I’ll take a look at a set of 598’s as a slightly better pair. For now though, I’ll be using the 280’s. If I had more money to throw around I would probably gone with the 598’s or something like them.

I hope you enjoy them
When you think about upgrading you will run into the issue of if you will need an Amp to use your headphones. I was not ready to commit to that :stuck_out_tongue:
