As a complete noob to the franchise I wanted everyone’s opinion on which Civ game I should buy and why.

After playing them both, It’s difficult for me to choose between the two so I suggest having a look at Totalbiscuit’s WTF is videos for both Civ 5 and 6 (or just the one for Civ 6 since he does talk a bit about 5 as well).
He’s one of the reviewers I trust the most and the current video I’m watching
Always love input though from players/fans.
Oh boy, this is definitely a tough one. I really like Civ VI but I’ve “only” put about 13-15 hours in so far, and you honestly could do no wrong with either. I’d say it comes, down to if you want a faster/active(Civ VI) or slower/passive(Civ V) type game. I can’t give a more solid opinion until I’ve played more Civ VI, however I will say it seems pretty beginner friendly compared to say, civ 4 and seems to be a great place to start with the franchise if you want in on the new hotness
To me Civ 6 is a complete improvement over Civ 5. The one thing I’m missing is the World Congress. It has everything else, that Civ 5 had with two addons, with a new twist on it. However, if you’re a seasoned player, you will come to hate the AI, since it is very hard to please, and sometimes acts strange in combat. That being said, in my latest deity win (hardest difficulty, where the AI blatantly cheats), I was allied to Trajan (Rome) for the better half of the game, so he liked me.
If you are new to the series, I have contradicting advice:
The game is beautiful, music is terrific, and aside the AI, to me, the game is a 10/10, maybe even a perfect 5/7. Try it out! If you are new, the AI will not really matter to you, and the many minor issues, most of which should be tweakable by changing numbers, will be fixed soon™ by either patches or mods.
You are curious to the franchise in general, maybe for a while. Wait for the next sale. It will be 25%, maybe even 33% or more, off in the inevitable winter/holiday sale on Steam. Alternatively there is IsThereAnyDeal, a site that collects deals from legit game stores, no grey market bullshit.
When Civ 5 was released, I told my friends to get Civ 4 with addons instead. This time around I say ‘newer is better’. Probably for the first time in this franchise, I personally like a title more than its predecessor.
TLDR;
Get Civ 6 over Civ 5, unless you find a crazy deal.
Civ 5 Complete edition was under 10 bucks, don’t pay more.
For reference, I got around 800 hours in Civ 5, and 50 hours in Civ 6 (It’s been out for 5 days, should speak for itself). I haven’t tried multiplayer in 6, yet.
For me Civ 6 just makes (sometimes subtle) improvements on everything that Civ 5 already did so well. I do miss the diplomatic victory but I suspect we will see some DLC in the future.
Right now I would definitely recommend 6 over 5. However if you are new to the Civ series and haven’t played before, Civ 6 is an expensive game, if you wanted to test the water first then maybe wait for 5 to be in a sale and try that out first.
If you are interested in Multiplayer at all i would say civ6 is the way to go. Almost all the players i know are moving from Civ5 to 6 and the Netcode is muuuuuuch better in 6.
Civ 5 only really makes sense if you get the DLC aswell, so if you can find a good deal for the complete Edition i would recommend that. Civ 6 is a good game right out the gate withou any DLC.
I can’t see me going back to V after playing VI in all honesty - they’ve just made too many improvements in it, even when you take DLC into account.
Maybe I’ll change my mind when I get to 100 hours, of course…
