Discord - Open to Public or Leave Sub Only?

What do you guys think? I don’t see the server as a sub only perk, just a barrier of entry from gigantic trolls, but opening it up could allow for people who want to be party of the community here and can’t subscribe.

Thoughts?

I think it would be great for all people to use. I think u will need mods and admin to help weed out trolls and a holes

Personally, I say to leave it sub only as it is a nice place to chat without any trolls. I say this as pat of some discord channels of other streamers, where conversation has devolved into twitch chat.

That being said if the discord is opened up to everyone, as long as there is moderation to keep the trolls and such in check, I would much prefer that. The community that you have grown is a very respectable and nice one to interact with. I would love to have more people to talk to in the discord, as it is sometimes a ghost town with no one talking.

However, at the end of the day, its your decision to make and I’ll be fine with whatever you choose. :itmejptip:

TLDR: If discord is opened to everyone, with moderation, that is what I would prefer.

Yeah, agreeing with the rest of the people here. With proper moderation, an open Discord can be a good place for the community to grow and interact more directly.

I’d say open it up with proper moderation! Maybe, if it’s possible, keep certain channels sub-only. #rollplay_live for example could be a place for subs, since Twitch chat is available for everyone when Rollplay is on air.

Edit: Didn’t mean to post that as a reply to you, @DealerUmbra

My personal opinion is that if someone is active enough here on the forums (maybe once they hit a certain rank?) they should be offered an invite to the Discord. That way you are weeding out the trolls ahead of time and not letting a mass amount of people into the Discord at once.

  • this is coming from a non sub who would love to be in the Discord

Alternative is to have two different discords. Leave the sub-only one private for now and maybe create a trial open server, test it out and see what happens?

Our discord is not as active or it was not when I was still using it. I would open it up for everyone but as others said mods are a must in that case and channels for subs only if things get out of control.
I wanted to talk with people there often by using voice and had a chance only 1 time in period of 6 months (good long chat that I have enjoyed).

Having a forum and open discord, makes shit a little to… I don’t wanna say chaotic. Though that’s the only word I think of.

Being part of Adam’s community Mathsquad mostly on Discord, I think their approach as an open Discord but with special benefits for subs (such as the ability to post links with previews or etc) is quite nice. Although that community is much smaller so moderation is easier for them, they also have several Discord only mods.

TL;DR I’m open to the idea of an open Discord, but I am not sure how well it would work for this community, but it can be done with proper moderation probably.

I would prefer a open discord that is heavily moderated to keep trolls away.
It’s a fun place to chat with fellow viewers and maybe comment on dropped frames or any Rollplay shows as their happening without the twitch chat trolls.
Some other Discords i am in notify when they go live. a lot of time i forget about rollplay and when it goes live and i forget a lot and its how i fall behind than just am like screw it just gonna binge watch on YouTube.

o7 you fought valiantly RIP in pepperoni.

I didn’t know Jesse Cox had a Discord either for like half a year, even after looking for it myself.

sub only otherwise some asshole could spam a virus link or something like that and somebody would click it ^^

There are ways to deal with things like that, for example have the bot delete all links from new users and restrict non subs ability to embed links.

Maybe make it open to subs and community members, I think that is limited to people that have visited the community for 7 days.

Yeah Discord has really nice User Group settings, so you could just limit the standard user group to only really be able to connect to places and chat, then make a different group that they will get upgraded to when they meet X requirements where they might be able to post links or the like.

I know in Mathsquad Discord we allow everyone to post links for example, but only Subs get theirs to preview (ofc whoever turns off client-side previews won’t see that).
