looking forward to which of the inspirations make it into the final product
good call, noor! thank you!
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is what comes to mind immediately for me, besides Star Wars of course.
I think my scifi-lexicon is fairly similar to what’s already been mentioned above (Firefly/Battlestar Galactica/The Expanse/Red Dwarf/Alien etc), but there’s two more I’d like to add:
First: Coriolis. It’s a Swedish TTRPG which is a sort of Expanse/Firefly/Swan Song-mashup with a distinct middle eastern-aesthetic. I think there’s an English translation out there, but I’m not sure about the availability.
Second: The Valérian and Laureline-comics. Grew up reading these and I’m very curious to see how it’s gonna make the jump to a movie. Seems like they’ve nailed the look at least.
For some reason seeing this thread, China Mieville’s Embassytown is what popped into my head. Very little in common with Saga etc really, but the aliens are bizarre and awesome and worth looking at imo.
tbh, anything by Mieville has interesting and quirky ideas in, Kraken is more strange ideas than coherent plot but could be great as inspiration for a quite off-the-wall universe, despite not even being sci-fi
